Representing catastrophes. On atomic bomb paintings, anime, and 3/11

Between 1950 and 1982, Japanese artists Iri and Toshi Maruki painted their so-called ‘Hiroshima panels’ (genbaku no zu) as a way of dealing with the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This presentation looks at these large-scale paintings to find out how catastrophic and traumatic events can be expressed in a visual language. This will lead to a better understanding of what it means to represent traumatic history in painting and other visual media such as anime or the news. How can one represent a catastrophe so horrible that it escapes our understanding? The presentation will be richly illustrated and will be followed by an audience Q&A and discussion section.
